TPN in Focus: A Year of Innovation and Growth

How The Pathology Network Strengthened Diagnostic Systems in 2025

The 2024/2025 financial year marked a period of significant progress for The Pathology Network (TPN). Strategic investments in technology, systems, people, and partnerships have continued to drive innovation and growth across the organisation even more than before.

At the forefront of this transformation has been our commitment to pushing the boundaries in diagnostic medicine, and the amazing teams and people who have continued to show up to advance this work. The full report on our website highlights how each department contributed to this success.

Building Technology that Advances Care

Under TPN UK’s leadership, Spes360 underwent significant development in 2025, strengthening stability, usability, and automation to support future scale. Working with key stakeholders across the healthcare system, Spes360 acquired a set of core capabilities designed to improve reliability and operational efficiency.

These included AI-supported workflow optimisation, self-onboarding processes, secure webhooks enabling integration with third-party systems, end-to-end sample tracking with barcode generation, a redesigned user interface, and enhanced security through two-factor authentication.

Together, these changes improved platform scalability while enabling greater flexibility in how diagnostic services are configured and delivered across the region.

On the topic of Artificial Intelligence, CEO, Dr. Joshua Kibera, notes that the team has been experimenting with the potential for AI to help patients find the doctors they need when they need them through a Patient Agent. The team has also been experimenting with how AI can assist clinicians in choosing the right tests, interpreting results, chatting with colleagues, and performing other functions on Spes360. We believe that when these products are ready, they will transform the way TPN, patients and doctors interact with diagnostic systems.

“Spes360 has achieved significant improvements in performance and usability, delivering a smoother, more intuitive experience. Enhanced real-time support and a refined interface ensure that everyone stays informed and that responsibilities are clear, ultimately helping us achieve and surpass our TAT targets”

Diagnostic Excellence

Amongst other initiatives, TPN also strengthened diagnostic quality across the network with the rollout of the External Quality Assurance (EQA) program that enables laboratories to benchmark performance, identify variance, and improve analytical accuracy.

This initiative systematically reduced diagnostic errors, improved analytical accuracy across the network and provided partner laboratories with opportunities to benchmark their performance, identify variances, and refine their analytical techniques.

But the department is not intent on slowing down any time soon. The DSD department has enhanced its governance systems and invested in meaningful engagement with partner labs. Ms. Carol Nyaga, the Diagnostic Stewardship Lead, notes that the “key achievement this year was strengthening how we communicate around quality concerns. We have significantly reduced the risk of recurring issues, and labs have felt supported rather than scrutinised, making it easier to implement corrective and preventive actions collaboratively.” Today, Kenyan labs that work with The Pathology Network feel empowered to deliver their best work, strengthening the entire ecosystem of care.

Opening Doors for Collaboration

The Partnerships and Programmes Department has increasingly engaged with global pharmaceutical companies. Speaking to The Pathology Report, the Head of Partnership and Programs TPN Kenya, Mr. Pascal Olulo, tells us that these engagements represent more than just commercial opportunities; “they’re pathways to democratising access to world-class diagnostics.”

Pascal Olulo also notes that the Partnerships and Programs department’s success has been driven by a radical shift in its approach to initiating partner discussions. Dubbed The Partnership Framework, this modality has been critical for capacity strengthening, process integration and cross-department collaboration.

Expanding Reach and Commercial Readiness

The sales team has had a busy 2024/2025 year that has been largely occupied by investing in systems and structures that enable TPN to expand its reach efficiently, bringing quality diagnostics to more regions without compromising service standards. This has included merging with the Partnership Department to create the Business Development Department. One of the key programmes planned for launch in the coming year is the Agency Programme, which will enable TPN to work with local diagnostic players and scale even further. Additionally, the department plans to drive adoption of TPN’s expanded diagnostic product portfolio, including new services scheduled for launch.

A High-Performance Culture

The past financial year has been defined by people: the energy brought to the work, the curiosity shown, and the ambition that continued to move the business forward. The People and Culture Department has been at the core of this push, welcoming fresh talent into the organisation, creating space for young, ambitious minds to take on meaningful work and shape the future of the company.

Across teams, employees have embraced a high-performance culture driven by curiosity, ownership, and the desire to make a real impact.

“Our teams have represented us on various platforms, speaking confidently about our services and receiving genuine appreciation from the audiences we serve and beyond. These moments have strengthened our belief that we are building something valuable, credible and worth scaling. In many ways, each of us has grown, individually and collectively. As we step into the new financial year, we do so with optimism: ready to deepen capability, strengthen leadership, and nurture an even more rounded employee experience.”

Ms. Nancy Njoki, People and Culture Lead

Looking Forward

As TPN enters the new financial year, the foundation is clear: skilled teams, robust systems, strategic partnerships, and unwavering commitment to quality diagnostics that serve communities. The work continues with optimism, as we deepen our technical capabilities, strengthen community partnerships, and ensure that every advancement in diagnostic excellence translates to better health outcomes for the people we serve.

TPN stands ready not merely to participate in Africa’s healthcare transformation, but to lead with purpose, compete with confidence, and expand impact measurably. The journey ahead is one of continued growth, driven by the same values that have defined this year: excellence, inclusion, and an unwavering commitment to being a force for good in medical diagnostics. From the bottom of our heart, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
